Paint Party Friday February 8th, 2013

Happy Paint Party Friday.  I tried my hand at digitally painting this week.  I was looking for another creative process to do between drying times for my torn paper pet portraits but my studio table is so cluttered with bits and bobs of paper at that point that I didn't want to cart out more art supplies.  I'd seen some fantastic work my artist cousin had done digitally so I decided to give it a go.

Well I LOVED this process and these two paintings I created.  I posted them on my Facebook page and had lots of wonderful feedback and best of all when I'm done all I have to do to clean up is put my tablet away.

I did get lots of questions asking mote about digital painting so I wrote this up to explain the process.

Digital Painting

Process:

Digital Painting is an exciting art form in which traditional painting techniques such as oils, acrylics, impasto, water colors , and collage are applied using digital tools via computer, a digital tablet, tablet tools and painting software. Digital painting differs from other forms of digital art and computer generated art, in that it does not involve a computer rendering from a model. The artist paints using true painting techniques to create the digital painting directly on the computer. The difference between digital and traditional painting process, is that an artist arranges their painting in layers that can be edited independently. Also, the ability to undo and redo strokes frees the artist to be more expressive and bold, But a digital painter must employ all of the techniques and study of a traditional painter. Color mixing and brush strokes are still carefully chosen and applied. Digital painting
software give artists a similar environment to a physical painter: a canvas, painting tools, mixing palettes, and a multitude of color options with a lot less cleanup!

My Digital Painting Process:
To create a painting I start with a digital photo. I hand brush and blend the pixels using a digital paintbrush stylus and an artist's tablet. I use the same motions and techniques that I would use if I were applying a traditional paintbrush to canvas. I love to paint this way; I have control over color and light and can continue to refine the painting without fear of ruining it, this allows me to
thoroughly explore the image and bring out the emotional impact of the piece.

Thanks so much for the visit!  Can't wait to see what you're creating this week!  Happy Paint Party Friday, thanks t Eva and Kristin for the awesome hop!

Is it manipulation of an existing photo-adding paint effects on top of it or do you draw the image from scratch as you would on an actual canvas just using the photo for reference? I' m torn over how i feel about digital art generally although the outcome you've created here. especially with the cat, is really good.

You've done a wonderful job with digital painting and done away with the mess of paint brushes and paint and the cleaning of the brushes.
